Dear Friends,

Living with Type 1 Diabetes for the past 15 years has had its highs and low's. (No Pun intended.)  I am honored to serve as President of the Board for JDRF and serve on the committee for JDRF's Journey to a Cure Gala, which takes place on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Buffalo, NY. This elegant black tie affair attracts over 700 corporate patrons and families who are all joining together to support research efforts to cure type 1 diabetes, as well as celebrate how far we have come.

We have a Vision: A day without finger pricks and insulin injections. A day where parents can sleep through the night without waking up several times to check for dangerous blood sugar lows. A day when children can play with their friends & not feel like they are different or alone in their battle.

Please help bring us closer to this vision to making a donation on my fundraising website. Every donation, large & small, will bring us closer to a cure. More than 80% of every dollar directly benefits our research efforts, and your donation is fully tax deductible.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved.

The mission of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundations (JDRF) is to cure, treat & prevent type 1 diabetes (T1D). More than 80% of every dollar raised will directly benefit our research efforts to reach this goal. JDRF researchers are currently working on some incredible break throughs, including encapsulation.

Encapsulation is a therapy where a pouch composed of beta or islet cells (insulin-producing cells), surrounded by a protective barrier, is implanted into the body. The new beta cells release insulin when needed while the barrier protects them from being destroyed by the autoimmune attack. This therapy will allow T1Ds to live virtually diabetes-free for up to 24 months, at which time they would receive a new pouch.

Your donation will help make this therapy a reality for the more than 15,000 T1Ds in Western New York!
